Natural gas rate drops, electricity goes up

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The price of natural gas is down this month while the price of electricity is rising.

The April rates were posted by the city Thursday.

The natural gas rate for April has been set at $2.7795 per gigajoule, down from $4.0875 per gigajoule in March.

The fixed rate for 2021 is $3.50 per gigajoule.

City of Medicine Hat electricity customers will pay 8.781 cents per kilowatt-hour this month, up from the March rate 0f 7.330 cents.

The fixed rate offered by the city is 6.800 cents per kilowatt hour.

The monthly rates are determined based on the average set by other providers in the province.

The natural gas price is in the middle of the $2.956 set by Apex (formerly AltaGas) and the $2.6030 set by Direct Energy.

The electricity price falls between the high of 9.070 cents set by Epcor (Edmonton) and the 8.305 cents set by Direct Energy.
