Buying rabbits at Easter bad idea, rabbit rescue group

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Many people associate Easter with cute animals like bunnies and chicks.

One local non-profit is urging the community not to buy rabbits as pets.

Alison Van Dyke, a volunteer with Bunny Run Rabbit Rescue, says people think rabbits are easy to take care of and parents see them as a gateway pet for children.

She says rabbits require a lot of care and are considered an exotic pet. People get tired of taking care of them and let them loose.

Van Dyke says if you drive anywhere around Medicine Hat you can see the consequences. Rabbits can quickly increase their population.

“I think a lot of people would be deeply concerned if they saw people doing this with cats and dogs in the city where they were just abandoning them out in public and there would be human cry,” Van Dyke said. “But people think that rabbits are just fine being left out by themselves.”

Van Dyke says Bunny Run Rabbit Rescue desperately needs donations and foster homes as they currently don’t have any resources to rescue more rabbits.

Bunny Run Rabbit Rescue is committed to rescuing abandoned and feral rabbits.
