Annegret’s Chocolates makes tasty treats the old-fashioned way

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Things have been a little bit sweeter in our city since Annegret and Robert Jung moved here last fall.

The couple brought their shop Annegret’s Chocolates with them from Kelowna, B.C., where they lived for 18 years.

Annegret makes chocolate the old-fashioned way.

“We don’t have machines, everything is done by hand. Every single chocolate, every mold you see goes right now, through my hands,” Annegret says.

Easter goodies fill their chocolate shop right now.

Seasonal chocolate making for Easter includes a lot of molding to create different shapes.

Bunnies and eggs are popular and as a chocolatier, Annegret says you have to be focused.

She says it takes about a half-hour for one rabbit.

“So I do 10 bunnies at once, and that bunny takes me, it has to be painted, it has to dry, has to harden, then I fill it,” explains Annegret, who has been making chocolate for 25 years.

Artistry is also part of the job.

Each bunny eye is painted on individually and every truffle is created with its own unique flare.

Behind the scenes, it takes a lot of time and patience to create a piece of chocolate.

“If you could see how much work goes into it,” store manager Benita Lane explains. “Hand-rolling the ganache and then dipping it into the chocolate, then she decorates it, and different swirls for each chocolate, it’s quite incredible.”

Annegret is passionate about the job and her creations.

And she has been using these chocolate recipes for years.

Shipped in from Belgium, the international ingredients are fair-trade and have no artificial colours or flavours.

“So we have the old recipes I use from the very past. I got trained in Munich and we did it over there from scratch,” Annegret said.

With the specialty ingredients, store owner Robert says the main goal is the taste.

“There’s nowadays a lot of trends in the food industry to look fancy and have nice colours, but we more traditionally believe in excellent tasting chocolate. And the colour we try to put in the packaging, not into the product.”

Benita says a chocolate shop is already a fun place to work, but Annegret’s quality creations and love of the job make coming in every day very special.

“And then the new truffles, there were different ones at Christmas, the gingerbread, the eggnog, Benita said. “And then for spring, we have the passionfruit which almost tastes like lemonade.”

“I love what I’m doing and I will keep on doing it as long as I can and I have a super nice clientele in Medicine Hat,” Annegret added.
