COVID-19 update: Province confirms 184 variants of concern

EDMONTON,AB- There are 555 new cases of COVID-19 confirmed across the province Sunday (March 21). Of those, 184 cases are variants of concern, Alberta Health said.

In total, there are 5,971 active cases in Alberta. 908 or 15.2 per cent are variants of concern. Alberta Health said the South Zone has 60 variants of concern, and all are of the B.1.1.7. UK variant.

In the last 24 hours, 11,405 tests were completed. The provincial positivity rate stands at 4.8 per cent.

The province said 282 people are in hospital, 47 are in ICU.

Alberta Health also confirmed two additional deaths Sunday.

Across Southeast Alberta, case numbers remain low.

In Medicine Hat, there are seven active cases, 544 recoveries, and 17 recorded deaths.

Cypress County has one active case and 145 recoveries.

The County of Newell has zero active cases, 158 recoveries, and two recorded deaths.

The city of Brooks has two active cases, 1348 recoveries, and 14 recorded deaths.

The Municipal District of Taber has 12 active cases, 335 recoveries, and six recorded deaths.

In Lethbridge, case numbers are much higher.

The city of Lethbridge has 515 active cases, 2280 recoveries, and 28 recorded deaths.

Lethbridge County has 46 active cases, 542 recoveries and eight recorded deaths
