MEDICINE HAT, AB – HALO’s inaugural lottery fundraiser has really taken off.
In just over one week, the lotto is 75 percent sold out.
The lotto was launched on March 4.
The 2021 HALO Cattle‘er Cash Lottery will see 3,000 tickets made available for $100 each with the grand prize being either 20 bred heifers or $50,000 in cash.
November 24 is the planned cutoff, but CEO Paul Carolan says based on what they’re seeing right now they will probably move the date forward.
And they will make that decision once the lotto is a sellout.
Carolan says he has learned not to be surprised by HALO supporters.
“The people are so dedicated and passionate about this program and so no, I’m not surprised. We certainly extended the length of the lottery to make sure that we sold out, it’s important for us to have a sellout. But I’m not surprised to see this fast for ticket sales and we’re seeing ticket sales from across Alberta. At last count, I think there were over 215 communities from all across the province.”
Carolan says the HALO lotto will be a perennial part of their program going forward and they will evaluate the lotto for next year and will try to keep it unique and creative.
“The intention right now is to go ahead with a cattle or cash again next year, although there may be a larger grand prize and maybe more bred heifers as part of that.”

“We’re still very optimistic about this year, we’re optimistic about eventual government funding. What we’re most looking forward to is getting back to being in front of people. So hopefully as restrictions continue to lessen we’ll be able to plan more of our common and traditional events,” Carolan added.
