First cases of Brazil variant identified in province, Hinshaw announced

EDMONTON, AB- The province confirmed Sunday that the P1 variant, first identified in Brazil has been detected in Alberta.

Dr. Deena Hinshaw took to Twitter on Sunday to confirm the details.

According to Alberta Health, two people have tested positive for the variant. Both are from the Calgary Zone.

Hinshaw said they are both travel-related and were detected through aggressive screening.

There are 388 new cases of COVID-19 confirmed across the province today. A total of 8,348 tests were completed over a 24 hour period, bringing the provincial positivity rate to 4.8 per cent.

The province also confirmed six additional deaths.

In Medicine Hat, there are eight active cases, 540 recoveries, and 17 deaths.

Cypress County has one active case, 145 recoveries, and no deaths.

Newell County has two active cases, 157 recoveries, and two deaths.

The city of Brooks has two active cases, 1,349 recoveries, and 17 deaths.

City of Lethbridge has 415 active cases, 2100 recoveries, and 25 deaths.

Lethbridge County has 14 active cases, 539 recoveries, and seven deaths.

The Municipal District of Taber has three active cases 333 recoveries and six deaths.

The County of Forty Mile has two active cases, 115 recoveries and two deaths.
