MH Skateboard Association collecting for food bank

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Medicine Hat Skateboard Association will be out in big numbers Saturday collecting for the Medicine Hat & District Food Bank.

The skateboard association is doing a bottle drive from noon to 6 p.m.

Some members will be knocking on doors in South Ridge and others will be stationed in the Hillcrest Church parking lot.

Terrence Kowalchuk says a big part of the Skateboard Association’s mandate is giving back and the group has a long history of doing so. Over the years they’ve been involved in numerous charitable ventures locally and have even travelled internationally to help out.

“Since COVID we’ve done drop-off bottle drives but this is our first bottle drive where we’re going to go door-to-door in South Ridge and do pickups,” Kowalchuk says. “We really have felt there’s an urgency to give back. There’s an urgency of needs in our community and this is a small way that skateboarders in this city can give back.”

Kowalchuk says the food bank is the beneficiary this time because they are on the front lines.

“With all the needs that are popping up around us especially related to COVID the food bank is just a great organization serving people who are most in need in our community,” he explains.

Not only will they be accepting bottles, but they’ll also take cash and food donations at the door or in the parking lot.

One hundred per cent of the donations collected Saturday will go to the food bank.

The skateboard association is rolling into its busy time of year. There’s another Skate Skool in April at the Bay 3 Indoor Skatepark and outdoor Skate Skools will start in May. They’re also looking at staging the annual July 1 beat the Heat event in Kin Coulee Park and are keeping a close watch on the public health measures.
