Journey Towards Healing & Reconciliation Conference this week

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The 6th annual Journey Towards Healing and Reconciliation Conference is taking place this week in Medicine Hat.

The Miywasin Friendship Centre is hosting, and everyone is invited to attend this year’s virtual edition.

Cultural addiction counselor/program manager Chasity Cairns says the positive thing about having a virtual forum is getting the educational piece out to more people.

She says this morning’s session had 100 people registered.

From March 1 to 5, participants are taken through a series of presentations and question periods.

Those attending include Medicine Hat Community Housing, Medicine Hat College, Canadian Red Cross, Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter, and the Medicine Hat Police Service.

Cairns says creating understanding is important and we can learn from each other.

“Moving forward is a long road, but with reconciliation, the education piece is so important I think because it creates an understanding of who we are as indigenous people and that’s a diverse term. There are 634 First Nations communities in Canada, that’s First Nations alone, then there are Metis and Inuit.”

There is still room to attend the free virtual sessions this week.
