School division waiting for budget specifics

Feb 26, 2021 | 4:18 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Medicine Hat Public School Division (MHPSD) took yesterday’s budget as cautious optimism and they will know more details next month.

Superintendent Mark Davidson says they don’t have any more information than what was shared with the public on Thursday.

But he says the promise of funding is stable for next year and aligns with the division’s projected enrolment.

Beyond that, there are no details of budget specifics.

Davidson says SD76 will get a budget impact sheet that shows the amounts of each grant and how that compares to the prior year.

They are expected to receive that on March 31, which is the usual timeframe.

“And so what we have now certainly a more positive picture than we imagined it might be in terms of a promise of funding that is equal to our enrolment projection this year, and that’s certainly good news. But in terms of getting down to the planning for how we would support all of the different parts of our work, we don’t have enough detail to really get down to that yet.”

MHPSD’s budget isn’t due until May 31 so they have a couple of months to work with the numbers and put together a budget for the next school year.

Provincially, education will receive the most capital spending with $288-million invested.
