Women’s Shelter accepting donations on behalf of Bread & Roses Gala

MEDICINE HAT, AB – When home isn’t safe, the Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter has been open throughout the pandemic.

Normally at this time, they would be planning for their Bread & Roses Gala in March, but that’s on pause for this year.

The society is accepting monetary donations without their biggest annual fundraiser.

Executive Director Natasha Carvalho says they sent letters to previous guests to let them know they can still donate if they’re able.

Whether it’s the gala ticket price or what they would have set aside to spend at the silent and live auctions.

They do get funding from the province, but Carvalho says there are gaps they need to fill to make sure they’re able to offer program services, especially for the long term.

“We know that family violence isn’t going away. We saw an increase in numbers during the pandemic which we expected and so we just want to make sure that we have everything that we need to keep our doors open so people have a safe place to come to.”

You can donate to the women’s shelter through their website, phone, or even mail a cheque. Tax receipts are available.

Bread & Roses buttons are also available for purchase by donation.

Pick yours up by dropping by Medalta, Zucchini Blossom Market & Cafe, Station Coffee Company, Dee’s Baked Goods, and Red Velvet Hair and Body Bar.

The first year for the Bread & Roses Gala was in 2013.
