Cougar activity not unusual in Elkwater this time of year

ELKWATER, AB. — The Cypress Hills offer a healthy habitat for the population of cougars in the area, and the big cats are more active in the winter when it’s quieter in the park, leading to more sightings.

Conservation officer Zac Doan says visitors to the park need to be alert for all wildlife, and look for tracks and scat left behind.

He also advises people not to wear headphones and not to go out alone.

There have been sightings of cougars in the Elkwater townsite, but no problems so far.

“We are seeing good cougar behavior, they’re not staying around when they’re aware of people” says Doan.

He says the handful of sightings they have had are mostly at night and either from a vehicle or inside a cabin.

“Cougars, when a person is nearby, want to avoid that and they leave the area” says Doan.

Bear spray or a walking stick can act as a deterent and people need to keep their dogs on leash at all times while in the park.
