Consultations on creating new coal policies launch March 29

The Alberta Government wants your help in deciding what the future of coal mining regulations in the province should look like.

Last year, the province rescinded the 1976 Coal Policy, a law that protected sensitive areas of the Rocky Mountains from open-pit coal mining.

The government declared earlier this month that they would be reinstating the Coal Policy and developing better rules.

Now, Energy Minister Sonya Savage has announced a public consultation process.

“I have directed my department officials to bring forward a comprehensive consultation plan that is by Albertans and for Albertans. The details of the process will be announced before consultations begin.”

Starting on March 29, Albertans will be able to provide their feedback on the development of a “modern coal policy” that will “protect the areas Albertans cherish while allowing responsible resource development in appropriate places.”

The rescinding of the 1976 Coal Policy was a controversial move that sparked a fervent public backlash and the threat of numerous lawsuits.
