MEDICINE HAT, AB – Cancarb has reached a milestone in the expansion of its Medicine Hat plant.

The sixth unit at its thermal carbon black production facility in the city has been completed and commissioned, the company announced today in a news release.

The expansion boosts the capacity for its Thermax brand of thermal carbon black products to 54,000 MT per year.

“The new unit provides Cancarb with an additional 9,000 MT of capacity to serve our global customer base and gives us significant operational flexibility to maintain our other five units while pursuing new growth,” says project manager Jerimy Chisholm. “I would like to extend our gratitude to all of the project team, suppliers, contractors and Cancarb employees that made this a successful and safely completed project.”

He says the project was planned, constructed and commissioned safely utilizing more than 50 different contractor groups and amounted to more than 110,000 manhours of labour.

The majority of work was completed utilizing local contractors, with much of the specialized equipment, structural steel and piping being fabricated locally.

It was completed without any serious injuries or incidents.

The expansion project was announced in December 2018. It is the first major expansion at the facility since 2000.
