Cypress County to operate Walsh Visitor Centre

Feb 15, 2021 | 4:26 PM

CYPRESS COUNTY, AB- The Walsh Visitor Information Centre has a new operator.

Tracey Popick communications coordinator for Cypress County confirms they have leased the site along Highway 1 for one year.

The decision comes after the province of Alberta ceased operations last year.

The county hopes to get the visitor centre up and running by mid-May to capitalize on some of the potential tourist traffic. Recent figures provided by Tourism Medicine Hat show the visitor centre saw about 20,000 travellers from May to September.

“There’s a lot of hidden gems in the area, in our county and in our region. The next visitor’s centre would be Medicine Hat and as great as that is people who have come through from Saskatchewan, when they hit that visitors centre they are not likely to turn around and head back to Elkwater or go out to Irvine to see the replica dino head that is there,” Popick said.

Local businesses are encouraged to drop off any information pamphlets they would like to see displayed. Plans are also in the works to feature local artwork.

Anyone interested in participating is asked to contact the Cypress County office at 403-526-2888
