CMHA support program being offered for caregivers

Feb 4, 2021 | 4:31 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Canadian Mental Health Association continues to offer a variety of programs in our city, including support for caregivers.

Their online community group helps caregivers who are taking care of family members with mental health concerns or addictions.

Michelle Deminick is an educator with CMHA.

She leads the Caregiver Connections program with both lived experience and education.

It’s held Thursday nights from 6:30-7:30.

Deminick says caring for someone can get overwhelming with lots of struggles and challenges.

She says it’s important to take time for yourself and to set boundaries.

Self-care is also a big piece of the group and a unique challenge for those supporting a loved one.

Deminick will talk about ways caregivers can support their own mental health in a practical way.

“It’s nice to know that there are other people out there who are struggling with a lot of the same things and just knowing that you’re not alone and everything is going to be okay. And sometimes this group you can build friendships and relationships as well,” she said.

The Self Care for the Caregiver event can be found on Facebook.
