Loss of Provincial Grant leads to layoffs at MHC

Feb 2, 2021 | 1:55 PM

Medicine Hat, AB–The sudden loss of a long time funding grant from the province has resulted in some layoffs at the Medicine Hat College.

Two and a half full time positions and several part-time contracted positions are being cut.

The provincial grant which provided about $200,000 had been in place for many years and was renewed annually.

It supported the Alberta Sports Development Centre and the Be Fit for Life Centre.

The programs supported young athlete training along with wellness and fitness classes through the college.

The Dean of Student Services and Registrar Sandy Henderson says the college is disappointed to lose the funding along with the ability to continue services in those areas.

The layoffs take effect on February 12th.
