Clugston running for another term as mayor of Medicine Hat

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Mayor Ted Clugston will seek a third term as mayor of Medicine Hat in this fall’s municipal election. He made the announcement at the annual State of the City luncheon on Tuesday.

Clugston served two terms in the mayor’s chair, first being elected in 2013 and then re-elected in 2017. Prior to being elected mayor, Clugston was on city council for two terms as an alderman beginning in 2007.

In a year-end interview with CHAT News in December, Clugston talked about the difficult year 2020 was, as council passed a budget that included $14 million in cuts and the shadow of COVID-19 hanging over everything.

In Wednesday’s address, the mayor said having to navigate the pandemic this past year led to many moments where he had to make difficult decisions and deal with people who didn’t always agree with his or the city’s position.

Clugston says there are many projects on the go in the city – including the gas City Campground and Waterfront District that he wants to see through.

Flood mitigation work following the flood in 2013 and the opening of the Canalta Centre, now Co-op Place, are among the larger city projects in Clugston’s tenure as mayor.

Alan Rose, who launched the Medicine Hat Ratepayers Society in 2018, previously declared his intention to run for mayor.
