Ottawa OKs return of Boeing Max aircraft to Canadian skies

Jan 18, 2021 | 12:04 PM

MONTREAL – Transport Canada says the Boeing 7-37 MAX can return to Canadian airspace beginning Wednesday.

The announcement concludes nearly two years of government review after the planes were involved in two deadly crashes that saw them grounded worldwide.

They will now be permitted to fly as long as they meet conditions specified by Transport Canada last month.

Those include allowing pilots to disable a faulty warning system that was found to be central to the crashes in 2018 and 2019.

The Canadian measures go beyond those announced by the U-S Federal Aviation Administration in November, which required Boeing to make changes to the plane’s computer systems and required pilots to undergo training in flight simulators.

Transport Minister Omar Alghabra says Canadians can be assured his department has – quote – “diligently addressed all safety issues prior to permitting this aircraft to return to service.”
