Two local elected officials on social media site deemed too extreme by big tech firms
MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Parler social media site is being deemed too extreme by tech giants Amazon, Google and Apple who have now withdrawn use of their online infrastructure to host the site which sought to be an anything goes free-speech forum to rival Twitter and Facebook.
But that content didn’t discourage two local elected officials who have advertised their profiles on the site, which has now been silenced for not doing enough to muzzle extremist rhetoric.
In a Facebook post on Nov. 15, 2020, Coun. Jim Turner posted his Parler handle while Cypress-Medicine Hat MLA Drew Barnes has been on the site since last June and who reminded his social media followers of his profile as recently as the weekend.
