MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Medicine Hat Sports Wall of Fame will welcome two new inductees in 2021.

Bill Page and the Medicine Hat Hockey Hounds will be added to the wall at the Family Leisure Centre next year.

Page was a leader in the city’s boxing scene.

He founded the Medicine Hat Boxing Club in 1975 and coached and mentored athletes in the sweet science from then until his passing in 2016. After his death Page’s name was added to the club’s annual Ev Nieman Memorial Boxing tournament. He was inducted into the Alberta Sports Wall of Fame in 2005.

The Medicine Hat Hockey Hounds will also be inducted the city’s wall of fame next year. It will be the first organization inducted.

The Hockey Hounds has been around since 1970, bettering the community on and off the ice through the annual Hockey Hounds Major Bantam Hockey Tournament each November as well as scholarships and sponsorships.

Manager of recreation for the City of Medicine Hat Natalie Sauer says they’re proud to add them both to the Wall of Fame, saying it’s wonderful to recognize those who really make a difference in the community.

“What they both have is they were both builders in the community. Again, Bill for boxing, what he’s contributed building the sport of boxing in our community from nothing to be something,” said Sauer. “And the same with the Hockey Hounds they are also builders. They’re very steadfast with the hockey community. They’ve always been a resource for leadership and experience. They help with coaches criteria as well and they also do sledge hockey I should mention that too. They certainly deserve the accolades for helping sledge hockey come on board.”

Sauer says they’re waiting for more clarity on public gathering restrictions before setting a date for the induction ceremony.

Nominations for the Sports Wall of Fame are accepted throughout the year, with an annual deadline of Sept. 30.
