YMCA licensed day camps continuing this week

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The medical officer of health for Alberta Health Services South Zone says the YMCA can continue to offer licensed day camps this week after a positive COVID-19 case was identified in a worker on Dec. 24.

“On December 24th we were advised that an employee who worked in the December 21st licensed day camp tested positive for COVID-19. Due to the YMCA’s stringent policies on PPE, screening, and sign-in, the staff member was asymptomatic and wearing a mask at all times they were in our facility,” reads a release from the YMCA. “Additionally, all Covid-19 public health guidelines have been followed within the program including increased sanitization and disinfecting, reduced capacity, increased social distancing, etc.”

The YMCA says about 28 children attended the day camp on Dec. 21, and those families were notified via letter the same day the YMCA found out about the positive test. The letter stated the children are considered close contacts and must self-isolate, as per public health regulations.

“Since the beginning of this pandemic, the YMCA and Alberta Health Services have been in close contact, working together to ensure the safety of YMCA staff and families,” said Sharon Hayward, CEO of the YMCA of Medicine Hat. “Our approach at all times has been guided by local and provincial health officials. While all recommended protocols were in place, we continue to review our efforts to ensure a safe environment at our YMCA. We are grateful for the ongoing support and direction from local health agencies and our community. We will continue to work together to fight the spread of COVID-19.”
