TABER, AB – The Town of Taber has won an Alberta Minister’s Awards for Municipal Excellence for 2020.

The town was honoured for its wastewater operations collaboration with Lantic Inc. in the Building Economic Strength category.

“Winning an award from our provincial government is no small feat, and I would like to recognize our hardworking Wastewater Treatment team for their service and dedication which has led to this result,” said Gary Scherer, director of Engineering and Public Works in a release from the town. “They have dedicated numerous hours to make sure this partnership results in meeting all Alberta Environment approvals, and their hard work has garnered that result. This award also belongs to Lantic Inc. who have been exemplary to work with as partners.”

Lantic owns and operates Taber’s sugar beet processing facility which produces up to 150,000 tonnes of Canadian-grown sugar purchased from 200 sugar beet producers within a 70-kilometre radius of Taber.

The Town of Taber entered into a public-private partnership with Lantic in 2018 to operate the wastewater treatment plant and oversee the town’s wastewater program, maintenance plan and capital replacement plan through a fee-for-service model. The primary goal of the partnership was to seek the continued economic success of one of the Taber region’s largest employers, says the town, and it has since evolved into a benchmark for public-private partnerships in Alberta.

The award will be officially presented to town council in early next year.
