MEDICNE HAT, AB- A Medicine Hat woman got quite the surprising phone call Saturday Morning, when Debra Wickham , treasurer of the Medicine Hat Cubs notified her that she had won a raffle prize valued at $4700

“ It was just a bright light today when I needed it,” said the winner of the raffle Peggy Descoteau.

One of the raffle prizes included a $2000 travel certificate from The Travel Agent Next door. Descoteau like so many had to put her travel plans on hold due to the pandemic but she says she hopes to use it once it is okay to travel once again.

“ We had canceled a trip to Asia so we want to go back there, however, Maui is our number one. We will head to Maui as soon as we can,” she said.

Descoteau also won a $500 gift certificate from Deerview meats, two Yeti coolers, twelve bottles of spirits, and a number of items other items.

The raffle began as a way to raise funds for the Medicine Hat Cubs, a team comprised of players ages 17 to 21.

“it started knowing that when the new board of directors was voted in, in August that we had to find some money to get us started, if we were going to have a Hockey season at all. So we were just looking at different options in order to do that,” Wickham said,

Wickham and her crew raised money for six weeks, and they estimate they will be able to fund four months of ice time for the team, something they are extremely grateful for.

The team hopes to get back on the ice sometime in January if the restrictions are lifted.
