MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Medicine Hat and District Food Bank has had to scale back the number of volunteers from its usual 28 daily volunteers to 10 staff members due to COVID regulations.

But executive director Celina Symmonds says the food bank is still preparing 125 hampers each day containing more than 10,000 pounds of food by putting in 12-hour days to meet demand.

“We have the most loyal volunteers ever so we know when we open it up again and say, ‘hey guys, you’re welcome back,’ they will be here with bells on,” said Symmonds. “So we’re not so concerned about that, more concerned about just ensuring we have the capacity to get the food out while COVID is still a factor.”

Symmonds says so far they are managing and staff will have a break over the Christmas holidays.

The food bank is open Christmas Eve but will be closed Christmas Day, reopening on Jan. 4, 2021.
