WHL not able to meet January 8 target, season start delayed

CALGARY, AB – Medicine Hat Tigers fans will be waiting a little longer to see their team return to the ice.

On Tuesday afternoon, the Western Hockey League announced they will be delaying the start of the 2020-21 season and will not be able to meet their targeted January 8 start date.

This decision comes following consultation with regional health authorities and boards in the league’s four provinces and two states.

In a statement by league commissioner Ron Robison, the WHL will need to have the proper health protocols in place to protect players, staff, and fans.

“We continue to make every effort to get our season started, but our first priority has always been the health and safety of our players, and everyone associated with the WHL,” said Robison. “Given the public health restrictions that are currently in effect, we are not in a position to determine a new target date for our season. We will continue to consult with health authorities to determine when it is safe and responsible to get our season started.”

The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League was forced to shut down earlier this month following a number of COVID-19 cases in that league, while the Ontario Hockey League has been off the ice and will remain that way until the new year.

The WHL’s board of governors are planning to meet in January to consider when a return to play would be feasible.
