Spirit of Christmas Feast turns to delivery

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The United Way Spirit of Christmas Feast began with the idea of giving everyone a place to go on Christmas Day.

Public health restrictions mean that won’t be the case this year, but lead co-ordinator Jeremy Silver wasn’t about to let it go.

“I’m too stubborn,” says Silver, part of a group that created the event eight years ago. “I was not going to cancel the event and we re-mobilized, re-tooled the whole event to be food delivery service this year.”

Local businesses like IGA, Deluxe Meats and Seafood, McBride’s Bakery and private donors are donating the food.

In past years, the volunteers would cook the meal at the venue where it was being served. This year The Mustard Seed is being given the donations before Christmas Day.

“The Mustard Seed is cooking it all, putting it in containers and myself and a fleet of volunteers will be sitting outside in our vehicles, taking meals as they come out the door and coordinating delivery all over the city on Christmas Day,” explains Silver, calling them a saving grace.

Individuals can call Silver at 403-977-3766 if they’d like to get a meal. He asks any community agencies that may have a list of people wanting meals to email jeremysilver@protonmail.com
