Project Joy collects gently used devices to connect seniors with loved ones

MEDICINE HAT, AB – If you’ve received new tech this year and don’t know what to do with your gently used gear, you can donate older smartphones and tablets into the hands of long-term care residents.

Project Joy helps virtually connect isolated seniors with loved ones, especially over the holidays.

The organization was founded at the start of the pandemic to provide devices to senior facilities during COVID-19 restrictions.

Medicine Hat residents can drop off old tablets and smartphones at London Drugs before December 23.

Project Joy president Jay-Dee Netter says they are working to get as many devices as they can so loved ones can communicate with those who are isolated during this difficult time.

“Any ability to let them communicate, let them talk to their loved ones and let them know people care. And a grander scale too, to expose the fact that there’s a demographic of people that are severely impacted by these restrictions of COVID and it’s our seniors and people that are in care centres,” Netter said.

Monetary donations are also being accepted, visit www.projectjoy.ca for those details.

Every $250 raised can purchase a tablet that can help up to 5 seniors in a care centre.

Netter says the feedback they’re getting from the program is amazing.

“They don’t have the luxury or the ability to just pick up a phone and dial out or have video calls. So we’re really bringing them out of the dark in that sense and the opportunity to connect in this very difficult time,” he said.

The following devices are being accepted for donation to Project Joy at all London Drugs locations in Alberta:

Apple iPad / iPhone

  • iPhone 5 or newer
  • iPad Gen 3 or newer
  • Must be unlinked from Apple ID and iCloud Account and reset to factory settings
  • Remove protective case
  • Charger included if possible

Android Phone / Tablet

  • Age 4 years or newer
  • Must be unlinked from any management account and reset to factory settings
  • Remove protective case
  • Charger included if possible

Laptops, since they are more difficult to sanitize, are not being accepted as part of the device drive.
