Bird count needs bird counters

Dec 11, 2020 | 4:55 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Medicine Hat Interpretive Program is looking for Hatters with bird feeders to participate in the annual Medicine Hat Christmas Bird Count on Dec. 20.

The local count is part of a North America-wide count, which is the longest-running wildlife survey in the world, says a release from the interpretive program.

Feeder watchers are an important component of the count because they often observe a few species not found by territory monitors within our area’s count circle.

To participate as a feeder watcher, you must be able to identify birds to species.

Anyone interested in counting is asked to contact the Police Point Park Nature Centre before the count to learn the proper counting procedures and get a form to keep track of the birds.

Final tallies should be phoned into the nature centre.

Details about the count can be found on the Birds Canada website.

Hatters who want to participate in the count or have any nature related questions, they can phone the Nature Line at 403-529-6225. The centre will be closed to the public during the shutdown starting Sunday but staff will be on-site regularly to answer phone calls.
