“We also have the opportunity to reach across Canada with our stores and it’s going to provide that opportunity for smaller businesses that generally don’t have the marketing dollars and big advertising budgets to actually reach a broader audience and bigger potential within their business,” she said.

With or without an existing website, a local business may use the marketplace to sell online and get their product to market.

“This is not a short term solution, this is something we want for our community long term, Kowalchuck added. “And to make the investments now so that you can have that asset and that ability to continue to grow your business into the future.”

The platform allows buyers another opportunity to shop locally and support local businesses.

Shop YXH also has a search tool to help shoppers explore all businesses and products in Medicine Hat. They can be searched by product, location, or business.

There are 40 shops online in one place and it will be growing daily.

Shop YXH is free for businesses to sign up.

The project was made possible by the ‘Rural Opportunities Fund’, which is supported by Western Economic Diversification Canada.

This follows the ShopHere campaign to launch local websites for businesses.
