Christmas tree harvest

Busy year for Christmas trees at Cypress Hills provincial park

Dec 8, 2020 | 1:37 PM

ELKWATER, AB – There were no shortage of cars and trucks leaving the Cypress Hills with a Christmas tree strapped on them during the first weekend residents were allowed to cut their own lodgepole pine or white spruce from the provincial park.

More than 300 permits were issued from the Cypress Hills visitor centre on the weekend, said the director of visitor services for the park.

And Mike Ratcliffe says the price is right for those looking to cut down their very own tree.

“There is no fee for the permit this year,” he said. “When they go online possibly in the future there may be a fee. So this is the best year to get out there and get yourself an all-natural piece of greenery.”

Trees can be cut along approved areas near Murray Lake, Ressor Lake and Spruce Coulee roads until Dec. 23.

Permits can be access from the park visitor centre from Wednesday to Sunday during operating hours.
