Public opinion sought on changes to policing in Alberta

Dec 3, 2020 | 10:32 AM

The province wants to hear what the public thinks about the future of policing in Alberta.

An online survey is open until Jan. 4, 2021.

The role of police in the community, processes for handling complaints from the public and officer discipline are among the topics asked about in the survey.

The survey is part of the province’s review of the Police Act. The government has met with representatives from law enforcement, health and social services, municipalities and Indigenous communities throughout the fall.

“The Police Act has been largely unchanged since it was introduced in 1988,” says Kaycee Madu, Minister of Justice and Solicitor General. “This is an important opportunity for Albertans to help us develop legislation that reflects the realities of modern policing and ensures that police remain accountable to their communities and responsive to their needs.”

The government expects changes to the Police Act to be made next fall.
