Council debating mask bylaw at special meeting today

Dec 2, 2020 | 10:32 AM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Medicine Hat is the only city of its size in Canada without a mask mandate.

That could end tonight with council set to debate its proposed mask bylaw during an emergency meeting.

The city will livestream the meeting and will post a link to its meetings and agendas page when it starts.

Tonight’s special council meeting is open to the public, though it will be limited to 50 people on a first-come, first-serve basis.

That number does not include the mayor, councillors and other city officials that are regularly at council meetings.

The city currently has 105 active cases of COVID-19.

Council had planned to debate a mask bylaw at its regular meeting on Dec. 7.

Pressure increased as cases rose in the last half of November and two local doctors sent a letter urging immediate action on a mask bylaw.

The letter was signed by more than 400 residents including health professionals, business owners and clergy.
