Teddy Bear Toss ‘makes so many people happy’

MEDICINE HAT, AB –The Teddy Bear Toss will be the Teddy Bear Drop this year and will move from inside Co-op Place to the outside in the parking lot.

Instead of littering the ice with bears, other stuffed animals, toys and winter wear after the first goal of the game by the Medicine Hat Tigers donors will gently drop items in bins at a drive-thru event today from 2-4 p.m.

Salvation Army volunteer Kristina Hyde says the Teddy Bear Toss is a tradition that we don’t have to let go of just because of COVID.

“It makes so many people happy,” she said this week. “You think of the seniors who get a teddy bear and it brings them happiness, you think of the child who gets a life-sized stuffed animal when they’re sick it makes them happy and then a child who’s living in poverty who might not get a Christmas present now gets a teddy bear. It’s just super important because it’s all really vulnerable populations and you’re just bringing a smile to their face.”

Following a quarantine period, the items will go to senior homes, the Salvation Army Toy Hampers and the pediatric unit at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital.

With the start of the Western Hockey League season delayed until the new year, the Tigers players are not in town to be a part of the fun. Hyde says members of the U15 Rattlers Athletic Soccer Club team will help sort donation and she says Tigers mascot Rroary may make an appearance.

Organizers are encouraging donors to wear masks as an extra level of safety even if they do stay in the vehicle and are asking for only new items.
