YXH Gateway will service travellers, make airport area more inviting

It started with the terminal redevelopment and runway expansion in 2015 and continued with an airside commercial strip two years ago.

Chris Perret of Invest Medicine Hat says the piece begin developed now will service travellers.

“So you’ll probably see like a gas station, coffee shop, sandwich shop that kind of thing, similar to what you’d see as you drive into a lot of different airports around the province,” he said. “And then as you get further off you might see a hotel site or something like rent a car buildings that kind of thing.”

Perret says the development will make the area much more inviting for air travellers and those coming from Highway 3.

“Highway 3 is really one of our gateways into the city so as traffic comes in you’re going to see a much more inviting YXH and access into our airport that’s going to be much more appealing,” he said. “The airport overall is going to be really important to not only Medicine Hat but the whole region and we really want to start branding it and showing that YXH gateway into our community and into our economic development scheme,”

By the summer of 2021, a nine-foot, red illuminated YXH sign, a rammed earth sign with landscaping and other beautification details will further enhance the area.
