MEDICINE HAT, AB – The City of Medicine Hat is getting the message across to do your part to reduce the spread of COVID-19 and to avoid further restrictions.

Videos posted on their social media pages including Facebook and Twitter feature emergency services including Police Chief Andy McGrogan and the fire department.

As well as city services like water operations and the Family Leisure Centre for recreation services.

Fire Chief Brian Stauth shared his message to protect essential service workers.

“Let’s all pay attention and do what we can to slow and stop the spread of COVID-19. From an emergency service’s perspective, we need to work our way through this pandemic without crippling our ability to respond and look after people. The message was really do your part to help us, help you.”

Stauth says their staff are susceptible to COVID-19 just like any member of the population.

“Our folks we talk a lot about what they do outside of the workplace to protect their ability to be able to report to work and respond and look after our residents and visitors so it’s high and forefront in everyone’s mind,” he said.

Internally, the department has tight controls and are highly vigilant to keep themselves safe.

That includes separate crews at shift change and very stringent cleaning and disinfecting policies that occur shift after shift. There are also check-in procedures when staff report to work to minimize the chance of having a COVID exposure.

Mask wearing protocols are also in place when there’s not enough room for physical distance.

“All of these combine to create a safe workplace as we can and stay healthy,” he said.

As for COVID-19 exposure, Stauth says the fire department has been good so far and have not had a case in their department.

“And we’re going to do everything we can to keep it that way,” Stauth added.
