MEDICINE HAT, AB – A letter from Alberta’s chief medical officer of health is asking provincial police services to provide support to ensure enhanced health restrictions are followed.

The letter from Dr. Deena Hinshaw was sent to the Alberta Association of Chiefs of Police earlier this week.

But Medicine Hat police chief Andy McGrogan says it’s unlikely there will be much change in how officers operate, crediting residents for already following the rules.

As far as what actions local police have been doing, “It’s educate, inform, get compliance through that method – kind of a social method – and really enforcement, as we would know it, is really our last resort.”

McGrogan says city police have not had to charge any person or business with any offence tied to public health rules since the pandemic began.

That includes ensuring international travellers observe the 14-day quarantine period.

McGrogan says police continue to work with local health authorities and that relationship has been positive throughout the pandemic.
