Lethbridge-Medicine Hat’s unemployment rate up slightly in October

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The latest unemployment numbers have been released.

In October, the jobless rate for the Lethbridge-Medicine Hat economic region was 8.7 per cent. That’s up ever-so-slightly from 8.6 percent in September. Once again, though, the region saw the lowest unemployment rate of all economic zones in Alberta.

The province-wide jobless rate was 10.7 per cent in October. That’s a slight improvement from 11.7 per cent in September.

Below is a breakdown of the October unemployment rate for each region in Alberta, with September’s rate in parenthesis:

  • Camrose-Drumheller: 12.6 per cent (12.4)
  • Edmonton: 11.6 per cent (13.0)
  • Calgary: 11.3 per cent (12.5)
  • Red Deer: 11.1 per cent (12.1)
  • Banff-Jasper-Rocky Mountain House and Athabasca-Grande Prairie-Peace River: 10.8 per cent (11.2)
  • Wood Buffalo-Cold Lake: 9.9 per cent (11.4)
  • Lethbridge-Medicine Hat: 8.7 per cent (8.6)

CANADIAN ECONOMY

Nationally, the economy added 83,600 jobs last month.

That’s down from the more robust increase of 378,000 in September and fewer than the 100,000 economists had predicted.

Canada’s jobless rate in October was 8.9 per cent, down slightly from 9.0 per cent in September.
