City-proposed development seeks to attract burgeoning agri-business, petrochemical industry

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Medicine Hat is taking a small step in developing a large heavy industry park with municipal officials awarding a preliminary planning and civil engineering contract for development of the Northwest Industrial Park.

The site would be located across the three-quarter sections of city-owned land on the north side of Broadway Avenue across from the Aurora Sun facility.

The city’s administrative committee awarded the $510,000 contract late last month that will see zoning amendments to the Box Springs Business Park area structure plan as well as provide evaluations of what would be needed in terms of city services.

Jon Sookocheff, Invest Medicine Hat’s economic recovery officer, says the move to develop the land is to have a shovel-ready site for future investment in heavy industry in the region – specifically for the burgeoning agri-food industry.

“We’re optimistic and confident that agriculture is going to be a strong part of Medicine Hat’s, southern Alberta’s future,” said Sookocheff. “And part of the intent in undertaking this initial work is to make sure Medicine Hat is able to capture its fair share of investment.”

He added the development would be able to accommodate heavy industrial users such as petro-chemical upgraders along with steel fabricators.

Preliminary work on the development is expected to be completed by this time next year.
