Brooks elementary school placed on ‘Watch’ list

BROOKS, AB – Eastbrook Elementary School has been placed on the provincial “Watch” list as it deals with an outbreak of COVID-19.

The Brooks school received notice of the “Watch” designation on Tuesday.

“AHS has notified the Division that there are five COVID-19 cases at Eastbrook Elementary School. AHS has identified positive cases as part of community transmission. AHS has yet not determined cases as a result of school transmission,” says a statement posted by Grasslands Public Schools.

The communication from AHS states, “It is important to remember that when a school is on a ‘watch’ status it is simply a reflection that the number of cases has 5 or more cases. It does not mean there is ongoing transmission in a school, nor does it mean the school is not following the public health guidance.”

The Grasslands statement says AHS has determined close contacts of the five cases within the school context and those individuals have been contacted by the school through an emailed letter. Those individuals are now required to quarantine for the period defined by the close-contact letter.

Administration and teachers will deliver a learning-at-home program while students are quarantining.

Earlier this week, in-person Kindergarten classes at the school were temporarily postponed after the school was placed on outbreak status by Alberta Health Services.

A COVID-19 outbreak within a school setting is defined by AHS as “two or more confirmed cases occur in a school within a 14 day period.”
