Province proposing changes to auto insurance system

Oct 29, 2020 | 3:10 PM

The provincial government has introduced legislation aimed at providing auto insurance relief for Alberta motorists.

Finance Minister Travis Toews says the measures will ease cost pressures and stabilize drivers’ premiums.

The bill tabled in the legislature today seeks to increase affordability by controlling key cost pressures, including capturing more minor injuries under the compensation cap for pain and suffering damages and using a floating rate for interest accumulated on pain and suffering damages.

The legislation would also increase medical benefits for those injured in collisions, create more consumer choice and modernize and improve the system.
