Traffic court gives red light to in-person appearances

EDMONTON — If you’ve received a traffic ticket in Alberta, the office of the Chief Judge is asking you NOT to go to the courthouse to deal with the matter.

When the pandemic began in mid March, courts closed and they’ve been trying to deal with a backlog of files ever since.

The advice to people with a traffic ticket is to deal with it first by phone, mail or email until they are advised to attend in person.

Olav Rokne with the Office of the Chief Judge is asking people to hit the brakes before they go to court.

“People still are coming to the courthouse when they probably shouldn’t. We have capacity limits and there’s a real risk that if people, dealing with this backlog of tickets, that there will be too many people at these courthouses” says Rokne.

The same advice applies to people who are called as a witness.
