College to continue the majority of learning online next semester

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The next semester at Medicine Hat College will look very similar to what is taking place right now.

The college says programs will continue to be delivered virtually for winter 2021 as well as the blended approach.

According to the college, the fall semester has been running smoothly in virtual and blended formats.

Vice president of academic and provost Dr. Vicky Roy says some in-person classes will continue like the trades and students who have labs.

She says students and faculty have worked very hard and have done everything they can to make learning possible this fall.

And the college’s priority continues to be the health and safety of students and staff.

Roy says 250 students attend college on a daily basis now.

While on a normal year there are 2,300.

“I mean the students, of course, some of them, everybody has some anxiety, as personal issues. Some students in some programs they like the format, they can stay in Saskatchewan or somewhere else in Alberta. We have a few international students who are studying in Punjab and north of India who need to walk up at 2 or 3 o’clock in the morning to be a part of their class.”

Roy says they will meet with the college’s task force next week to see if there’s a possibility to increase the face to face component for students a little bit.

Especially for students who will be in practicums.

“We have a lot of students who are in the practicum next semester, they’re going to conclude their diploma and need to look at students who really need to be on campus. They’re going to graduate and we need to look at the ones who really need to be on campus so we will make some choices. But I don’t think we’re going to be very different than this semester.”

Roy says Medicine Hat College is also following the lead of Alberta’s three main universities and their plans.
