Crews respond to large apartment fire in west Lethbridge

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Lethbridge firefighters were called out to an apartment complex fire on the west side, just before 8 a.m. Friday.

The incident was behind the Save-on-Foods on Highlands Boulevard West.

All four fire stations responded to the blaze, which impacted 36 units in the complex with the fire contained by 9:20 and fully extinguished just after 10 a.m.

All residents safely evacuated to a nearby parking lot while they awaited emergency social services.

Fire officials indicate the fire appears to have started on a second-floor balcony and spread to the third floor and attic of the building.

One firefighter was taken to hospital for precautionary measures and is in stable condition.

Fire units remained on scene for precautionary measures and to watch over any hot spots.

An investigation is underway into the cause of the fire.
