Better services for rural Albertans

Barnes says it’s time for an Alberta police service

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Cypress-Medicine Hat UCP MLA Drew Barnes has made his position on an Alberta provincial police force clear.

In a statement posted to social media Thursday, he says “the time is now.”

Earlier this week the province announced that PwC will provide an independent assessment and study of the recommendation made by the Fair Deal Panel in its report earlier this year.

Barnes was a member of the Fair Deal Panel.

In his statement, Barnes says that “Albertans, rural Albertans especially, will receive services more aligned with Albertan safety, values and needs.”

Barnes also called for the immediate creation of Alberta’s chief firearms officer and suggested the $2 million announced for the police study be redirected to supporting early childhood service providers and supporting Alberta families.
