Rotary club unveils new sign 100 years in the making

MEDICINE HAT, AB – It’s taken nearly two years, but 23 Street NW now has a new name.

The road is now known as Rotary Centennial Way NW, in recognition of the 100-year history of the Rotary Club in Medicine Hat.

City council approved the name change in November of 2018.

The change only includes a portion of the roadway between Division Avenue North and Box Springs Road NW.

Rotary member and past president Dave Panabaker says the process started almost five years ago, which included working with the province.

“It’s 100 years in the making in many respects. Rotary started in June of 1918 in Medicine Hat and so this is a celebration for us as part of our centennial in 2018 to have a road named after Rotary.

It will cost about $2,000 dollars to cover the name change, but the Rotary Club is covering the bill.

The club is also planting 100 trees in Dunmore.

Panabaker says that’s set to begin in the next few weeks.
