PRSD offers online learning support sessions for parents

MEDICINE HAT, AB – It’s easy to get frustrated with technology, especially if you’re not familiar with it.

And with online learning as an option this school year, Prairie Rose School Division is offering training for parents.

Deputy Superintendent Reagan Weeks says the training helps parents become more familiar with the online classroom.

Families can set up an appointment with a personal coach.

Parents will learn how to navigate through programs like Google Classroom, learn how to use chrome books, and ask tech questions.

Kids are invited to join in the session as well.

Weeks says sessions are at the division office, but an educator can also come to rural homes.

“We realized that some of the tech tools that we were using to make this process work well in the home were not necessarily something that was familiar to all of our families. So what we did was we worked with our instructional coaches and with the learning from home team to set up appointments with families and parents where we could help them with the tech tools and walk them through the process so they were more comfortable using them at home,” she said.

Math teacher Kris Albers says parents have been relieved with having the training, “So it’s been great. They can come in and they’ve been appreciative of us being able to help navigate through that and work with their kids and themselves to better understand it so they can easily access assignments and different things.”

Though the learning from home program is being offered, Weeks says most students have returned to the physical classroom.
