MEDICINE HAT, AB- The Medicine Hat Police Service is urging residents in the Ross Glen area to be extra vigilant following a spike in vehicle thefts.

Insp. Brent Secondiak said police received numerous reports of vehicle thefts and attempted vehicle thefts the past few days.

“In the Ross Glen area we’ve noticed a dramatic spike in attempted thefts of vehicle and theft of vehicle. We have had several reported in the past few days. We have some known offenders in the area that have a history of targeting vehicles and vehicle thefts we are targeting those offenders and hopefully we can dissuade that type of behaviour or lay charges in some of the ones that have been done,” Secondiak said.

Secondiak said most of the vehicles reported stolen have been recovered by police within one or two days of the report being filed.

In terms of theft prevention, Secondiak said thieves often look for open vehicles with keys left inside, and it is importance for residents to be extra vigilant.

“Making sure the vehicle is locked, to make sure that it is parked in a well lit area. There will be extra patrols in the Ross Glen area for the forseeable future until we catch some of the known offenders.

But certain vehicle types are also more likely to be targeted in the city, Secondiak said.

“It comes in waves. For a while we had Ford trucks F250’s and 350’s that were being stolen. We had Dodge trucks, older model Dodge trucks that were being stolen. Most recently though it seems to be a variety of different makes and models,” he said.
