Cypress County keen to speak with new Municipal Affairs minister about impact of proposed tax assessments

DUNMORE, AB — Cypress County Reeve Dan Hamilton says they’re looking forward to speaking with Alberta’s new municipal affairs minister as soon as possible. Grande Prairie MLA Tracy Allard was moved into the position as part of a cabinet shuffle this week by Premier Kenney.

Hamilton says they’re eager to talk with Allard about proposed provincial changes to how oil and gas properties are taxed.

Cypress County and many others in Alberta say the changes will reduce tax revenues and that money will have to be recovered from county residents, farmers and businesses.

Officials have had discussions with local MLAs Drew Barnes and Michaela Glasgo about their apprehension about the potential impact the proposed changes to oil and gas property assessments could have on County residents, farmers and businesses.

“The discussions with Mr. Barnes and Ms. Glasgo have been quite positive” said Reeve Dan Hamilton.

“Both have expressed an understanding of the potential impact on our residents”.

Hamilton says many residents have also taken the time to contact their local MLAs to voice their thoughts on the matter, and says it has made a difference.
