REDCLIFF, AB – After a successful debut in 2019, the Redcliff Library’s bike rental program is moving again this year.

Shut down in the spring because of the unknowns around COVID, the program just restarted this month. There are six adult bikes and two children’s bikes for daily rental.

“More often than not it’s the kids that have the bikes and not the adults, which is why we have more adult bikes than children’s,” explains library manager Tracy Laturnus. “So this is an inexpensive way for everybody in the family to enjoy the outdoors.”

All you need to rent a bike for a day is photo ID and a library card from any library in Alberta, so even visitors to the area can get a bike.

Laturnus says there’s no shortage of places you can go on the bikes.

“You can ride around town, hit up the greenhouses, there’s some local programming that happens over at Lions Park, there’s the water parks, mountain bike trails. There’s so much to do with them; you can even use them as transportation into the city,” she says.

Because the program was just able to restart again on Aug. 1, there have been many inquiries but not a lot of use, says Laturnus, making this the prime time to take a ride.

And the riding doesn’t have to end when the snow touches down, since two of the bikes are all-season.

Laturnus says the bikes are wiped down daily and renters are encouraged to use Lysol wipes before and after use.

Bikes must be returned the same day they’re rented. The Redcliff Library is open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday to Thursday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

The program was created last year thanks to a grant from the Community Foundation of South Eastern Alberta, allowing the library to buy the bikes, helmets, locks and a bike rack.
