RCMP launch new online reporting tool

REDCLIFF, AB – The RCMP’s online crime reporting site is open to all Albertans this week after a pilot program launched in June is now available province-wide.

The online reporting tool is for minor property crimes under $5,000, including theft, vandalism and property loss.

Redcliff detachment S/Sgt. Sean Maxwell says the tool is designed to make reporting crimes easier for victims but won’t replace in-person calls for service for serious offences.

And online could be used to report minor offences quickly and efficiently while the data could be used to link together crime patterns in a neighbourhood.

As well, Maxwell says it can increase reporting of minor offences.

“It can certainly encourage people to do it,” he said. “They can get on their computer and within 15 minutes have it reported to us, sent in, they get a file number and they can get a call back if we do discover something.”

Maxwell added that if there is a suspect in a crime, victims should call police directly.
